Hong Kong women are obsessed with youth and beauty. In pursuit of both, they are willing to spend vast sums of time and money. Stores such as Bonluxe promise to slenderize ones body over 15-years (with an almost equally long payment plan).
The Miss Hong Kong pageant provides insight into the sometimes enigmatic feminine ideal. Slender, fair-skinned Chinese women wear pastel eye shadow and pink lip-gloss, and dance to themed music competing for the coveted title, as well as the culturally telling “Svelte Beauty Award”, Miss Adorable Complexion, Miss Photogenic and Miss Modernity.
