CCCP Underground Circle Details
© Frank HerfortThis series is an additional work which stands next to Herfort’s CCCP Underground. “I was always bold over by the outstanding beauty of the handcrafted decorative artworks you can find in any of these subway stations. So, I focused not only on photographing the architecture of the halls but also on details like ceiling lights and other wall details. But mostly I was impressed by the lights and chandeliers design.”
From the very first and oldest lamps from 1940’s in the rich Stalin Empire built out of metal and covered in crystal glass until the most recent lamp designs from the 70’s/80’s with minimalistic abstract communist style with smart aluminium designed construction. There is a lot of inspiration for architects and designers and in contemporary design, you often find elements and concepts made decades ago in the soviet subway system. So, for Herfort it is more of a visual collection of some soviet-style designed objects for the public to walk under on their daily commute.
