Emily Garthwaite’s Dijlah: A Journey down the Tigris River to be exhibited at this years Visa Pour L’image  in Perpignan, France

Garthwaite is also the winner of the Visa d'or of the City of Perpignan Rémi Ochlik 2023

It was in 2019 that Emily Garthwaite first saw the Tigris River, or Didjla in Arabic. At the heart of the cradle of civilization, it is on the waters of this river that the photographer crosses Turkey, Syria and Iraq. Through the prism of the Tigris, this story presents Iraq between ancient civilizations and contemporary life.

Each year, a selection of the best stories from around the world is shown in Perpignan. Visa pour l'Image is an international photojournalism festival established in 1989, which takes place annually in the entire city of Perpignan, France.  This is the main and most important festival of photojournalism in France and runs from late August to mid-September for a period of 15 days
